Chandler has a long and exciting history. The town was started in 1891 by Dr. Alexander John Chandler, a veterinarian surgeon with a thriving practice in Detroit, Michigan. He used his own property (80 acres) to experiment with irrigation techniques and applied his findings to large tracts of land south of the Salt River Valley. This evolved into a system of canals that brought new life to the desert—canals that laid the foundation for the city of Chandler.
The town has prospered ever since and now boasts around 254,000 residents. It’s a town where family values are still held in high regard. The kind of town where neighbors help one another and people are friendly and polite.
What better way to explore the countryside—much as Chandler himself would have—than on horseback? You can also learn more about the original inhabitants at the same time. The Koli Equestrian Center has been set up on the Gila River Indian Reservation.
You can enjoy a fantastic vista and the vast knowledge of your guide. You’ll get to make friends with the people riding next to you and have a lot of fun.
If you’re looking for a way to get the kids out of the house, this is a fun trip. You’ll all learn something. The museum features railways of the West. You’ll get to see various relics of a bygone era, railroad cars, and a range of other fun exhibits.
The staff is well-trained and friendly. Ask them anything about the exhibits that you can think of, but of all things, don’t leave until you’ve had a shot at ringing the bell in the locomotive.
This mall is huge. It has the honor of being the second-largest shopping mall in the whole Phoenix metropolitan area. Spend the day window shopping, grab some lunch, get your hair done—the list goes on and on. It’s a great way to beat the heat and keep the little ones entertained.
This is a park that’s extremely family-friendly. Adults and kids alike can enjoy a train ride to see the whole park. Little ones will enjoy feeding the ducks, and dad will have fun fishing in the lake. If the day is getting a bit warm, beat the heat with the splashpad or retreat to the shade.
When you’re ready for action again, hit the trail on your bike, shoot some hoops, or lob a tennis ball across the court.
Does the culture vulture in you need some inspiration? Then head down to the Chandler Center and take in a play, musical, or ballet performance. The center offers a full package of shows to suit different tastes. It’s a smaller venue, so you don’t have to worry about seats that are unusually far from the stage.
If a sedate horse-ride doesn’t quite do it for you, check out the motorsport park. You’ll get to watch some exciting action on the racetrack. It’s a lot of fun and very exciting. Will your team win? Are they going to finesse their way to a first place?
Don’t forget to visit the Rawhide Western Town and Steakhouse when you’re done, speaking of which…
If you’ve ever dreamed of being a rooting, shooting cowboy, head out here for some fun. The town replicates an ideal frontier town in the 1880s. With, of course, a cool gift shop so you can get all your cowboy (or cowgirl) gear. It also features a shooting gallery to show how you would have fared asa gunslinger in the old West.
Head over to the steakhouse for the best barbeque in the States. You’ll be served by cowboys, and your dessert is free. Where else would you get a deal like that?
When it comes to the history of the town, there’s no better resource than the Chandler Museum. It’s worth a visit simply to see the structural designs. It’s a 1938 take on Pueblo architecture. It’s absolutely charming!
Whether you’re looking to visit or looking to relocate, Chandler is a great place to be. From frontier town magic to the latest in motorsports, there’s something for everyone in this little town. If you get bored here—with all the fun activities on offer—then there’s no hope for you.
