What is it that makes Gilbert, AZ so special? It’s hard to narrow down. We’ve got a friendly community, a nice clean city, beautiful surroundings, and just enough hustle and bustle to keep everyone happy.
With a population of just over 230,000, this is not a small town. That said, it still retains something of a small-town feel thanks to the friendly atmosphere. We love getting to know our neighbors and look out for each other.
The population is primarily white, but we also have numerous people of other ethnicities who call our city home. The ladies slightly outnumber the men at the moment, but not by much. 64% of our population are adults under the age of 62.
Anyway, that’s enough of the basic details. Let’s have a look at what there is to do here.
This reserve is a bird watcher’s paradise. There are more than 200 species of our feathered friends living here. The Audubon Arizona Family Bird Walk is a fun outing for everyone. The walk starts at 8am and is held on the third Saturday of the month. It’s free.
Have fun walking, and don’t forget to pack a picnic basket. The picnic area is well maintained and has clean bathrooms as well.
Relax after your day in the park by visiting the Hale Center Theater. It’s got space for up to 350 people, but what makes it special is how the seating arrangement. They’re placed in rounded rows to allow everyone a better view of the stage.
The theatre is in downtime Gilbert, and there are plenty of excellent restaurants to visit.
In fact, you’ll want to come back during the day to explore the downtown area more thoroughly. It’s not a huge area, but it’s got a lot going on. Come in early on Saturday morning and find the freshest fare. The farmer’s market is tucked in near the back of the water tower.
There are often local bands providing live music and a range of yummy goodies to eat.
One thing that this area is really popular for is the variety of restaurants. Try to see how hot you can get Mexican cuisine or enjoy a traditional Italian meal. If you can’t find something you love here, you’re not looking hard enough.
Even if you’re not religious, it’s worth making a trip to this church. We recommend calling ahead to ensure that no worship services, weddings, or funerals are scheduled. The priest is normally quite happy to have visitors. You’ll love the amazing décor and the life-sized replica of the Pieta.
Those that say Disneyworld is the happiest place on earth have never been to Gilbert. This park has three Ramadas, a skating area, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, and picnic areas—and we’ve only just gotten started.
There’s also a large lake that is kept stocked with fish. Yes, you’re allowed to fish here. There’s also a great entertainment area for the little ones. It includes:
There really is something for everyone here, and the whole park is wheelchair accessible.
This is Arizona, and we love our guns. Get in on the action yourself by practicing clay shooting. You get to go out into the beautiful desert area and blast away the stresses of the day.
We touched on the farmer’s market briefly earlier, but it deserves a section of its own. Come through every Saturday to check out locally grown produce that has just been harvested. There are between 60 and 100 vendors on any given day, so there’s a lot to choose from.
Forget taco Tuesdays – make Saturday your day to chow down on tamales and quesadillas. You’ll find a wide range of food, jams, sauces, pickles, and a lot of handmade items. Who needs to head off into the big city anyway?
