Gilbert is located in the beautiful state of Arizona. While it may not be as famous as Phoenix, which is less than 30 minutes away, it’s an interesting city with lots of fun things to do and see. The following are several interesting facts about Gilbert, AZ.
Gilbert has been a fast growing town in recent years. The population was a mere 5,717 back in 1980. In recent years it has grown to over 200,000. Gilbert was once famous for hay shipping but has recently gained a reputation as one of Phoenix’s coolest suburbs.
Another interesting fact about Gilbert’s history is that it once had an airport. Starting in 1946 and staying in operation until 1959, Gilbert’s airport was primarily used for a crop dusting business. The airport also had a packed-down dirt runway.
During the month of January when much of the rest of the country is experiencing cold weather Gilbert is still warm. The average temperature even in January is 67 degrees. In July it averages 106 degrees! The all time high has been 118. Like many other spots in Arizona, Gilbert has lots of sunny days. In fact, there are usually over 300 days of sunshine in Gilbert.
Even though Gilbert is definitely large enough to be considered a city, it is still technically a town. Since it does have such a large population, this makes Gilbert the largest “town” in the United States.
One of Gilbert’s most interesting landmarks is the water tower. It’s 230 feet tall and was built in 1927. It was built to hold water for both drinking and any firefighting needs. It was used for these purposes until 1985. Now the water tower is the center attraction of the park and plaza.
There are some really quirky facts about Gilbert many people may not know. The first is that the town had a swimming pool that cost $52.50. A women’s club in the 1940’s raised the money so Gilbert could have a pool. Another crazy fact is that in the 1970’s a woman gave birth in the bank vault at the Bank of Gilbert.
There are several interesting people from Gilbert who have made their mark on the world. The World Champion Poker Player in 1993, Jim Bechtel, is from Gilbert. There’s also the rock band, Jimmy Eat World, that is from this great town.
If you like football, you’ll want to know that Ryan Fitzpatrick is from Gilbert. Fitzpatrick is currently a quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. If you’re more of a basketball fan you’ll be interested to know that Nick Johnson played high school basketball in Gilbert before going pro.
You’ll want to come to town during Gilbert Days. This is a three day celebration that commemorates when the road in downtown Gilbert was paved. Activities include a 1 mile and 5k run, a parade, a rodeo, and a carnival.
If you enjoy the theater you’ll want to check out the Hale Centre Theatre. What makes this theater so unique is that it has a round shape with all the chairs placed in a circle around the center stage. Gilbert also features a hot air balloon display during the Christmas season, and is known for their craft beer and huge pretzels.
